The Story Behind the Work

How a corporate burnout observation became a mission to transform Singapore’s workplace culture

Michelle’s journey into workplace wellness wasn’t planned. It started with observation—watching bright colleagues at a multinational financial services firm slowly fade under relentless work pressure. No one was talking about it. Everyone just accepted it as the price of success in Singapore’s competitive business landscape. That bothered her.

She went back to school. Master’s in Organizational Psychology from NUS, then postgraduate certification in Executive Coaching from SMU. The research was clear: unchecked work culture doesn’t create better performance. It creates burnout, health problems, and ultimately, worse results. But knowing that intellectually and actually changing workplace behavior were two completely different things.

For the past 14 years, she’s worked with Singapore’s biggest companies—finance firms, tech startups, professional services. She’s trained managers on creating psychologically safe cultures. She’s coached over 2,000 professionals in managing after-hours expectations, designing device-free evenings, and declining additional work without career anxiety. Her research on stress resilience in high-performance environments has appeared in regional HR publications and corporate wellness forums.

But here’s what really drives her work: it’s those moments when a professional tells her they actually enjoyed their weekend. Not because they felt guilty about not working. Because they’d genuinely recovered. That’s when she knows the frameworks are working.

Michelle believes boundary-setting isn’t a soft skill or a wellness luxury. It’s a prerequisite for sustained excellence. You can’t perform at your best when you’re running on empty. You can’t make good decisions when you’re exhausted. And you definitely can’t build anything meaningful when you’re always reacting to the next message, the next deadline, the next demand. That’s not high performance. That’s just high stress.

Her Teaching Philosophy

Evidence-based, Singapore-specific, and unapologetically practical

Michelle doesn’t believe in generic wellness advice. Singapore’s corporate culture is unique—competitive, relationship-driven, hierarchical in ways that matter. The boundary-setting frameworks that work in Melbourne or Singapore’s expat community often don’t translate to the local context.

Her approach combines three things: behavioral psychology research, stress neuroscience, and real-world workplace dynamics. She’s not teaching theory. She’s teaching the conversations you’ll actually have with your manager. The specific ways to phrase things so they land. The systems that help you maintain boundaries when the pressure increases—because it will.

She works with professionals who are genuinely committed to high performance. They’re not looking to do less work. They’re looking to work smarter, maintain their health, and actually enjoy their lives outside the office. That’s not laziness. That’s sustainable excellence.

“Declining tasks politely, establishing device-free recovery time, and building restorative weekend rituals aren’t luxuries for successful professionals—they’re prerequisites for sustained excellence.”
